Team,

The attached article regards Sony's entry into the HSM-tape appliance game. I read earlier today that Sun is OEM'ing this solution into video broadcast markets.

The good news is:

a.. When someone like Sony validates the legitimacy of HSM to tape, its a beautiful thing
b.. Their solution is 16 terabytes for $388,000. Or about 2.5 cents per megabyte.
c.. DTF, their tape technology offers high bandwidth for large-file applications, but suffers from slow load and access times. They can't get into document management or any markets that have fast-access requirements. (surveillance is a maybe, depending on how much the customer will invest in disk to mask the slower tape access...)
d.. I don't think they can touch us in most markets, as we can enable our partners to have a choice of tape technology and hit under 1 cent per megabyte.
e.. Sony stinks at marketing and channels
f.. Grau data is already there (except for the OEM deal with Sun), and are finding themselves limited to high end purchases through underdeveloped channels.

Anyway, we're very well positioned to go get a significant share of the mid-tier, and apparently a significant portion of some of these verticals as a reasonably priced, fully functional alternative.

Hang in there...

Dan O
