The test idea worked rather well for us at StorageTek. Ned used to give the
C++ test to each of the candidates. The way he did it if they couldn't
answer the question he turned it into a teaching opportunity. I don't think
any of them ever left feeling tortured. The test was given separate from the
interview.

I think it is entirely appropriate to quantifiably ascertain the level of
knowledge a candidate has before we offer them a job.
