I think an important point is that Ned's tests were verbal, not written.
I think that would make the candidate feel more comfortable.

The test idea worked rather well for us at StorageTek. Ned used to give theC++ test to each of the candidates. The way he did it if they couldn'tanswer the question he turned it into a teaching opportunity. I don't thinkany of them ever left feeling tortured. The test was given separate from theinterview.I think it is entirely appropriate to quantifiably ascertain the level ofknowledge a candidate has before we offer them a job.P----- Original Message -----From: "Jay Miller" <jnmiller, colorado dot edu>To: <antera, enigma dot cryptofreak.org>Sent: Tuesday, March 19, 2002 3:41 AMSubject: Re: Jay's Linux quiz!

Actually question B might be a little on the difficult side.
Herm. Here's how I was looking at it. We're going to be interviewing afair amount of people, some of whom seem to be quite qualified. A testlike this isn't meant to make or break them, it's just meant to beanother gauge. That is, *other things being equal*, yould you ratherhire the gal who made it to question two or the one who made it toquestion four?I thought that if she made it through one and two, it would be safe toassume she could also handle (more or less) your A/B/C questions (eg.)too.I guess I'm saying that my goal was to test applicants' *limits* ratherthan just 'Are they above a certain baseline?'I'm certainly not tied to the test idea, btw. Just pushing for it!--Jay MillerPGP: 0xedc9bb8d | 41a6428c 46abd36b 6b259b68 8a28ca4c edc9bb8c--This is the antera mailing list.
